WA - Perth to Kununurra
Western Australia
Step 1. Quit jobs
Step 2. Hit the road.
Featuring myself - Jascha and my girlfriend Roxanne.
First stop Geraldton to visit my sister and then heading further North for some warmer weather!
On the way - Hutt Lagoon - aka Pink Lake, a worthy stop if heading to Kalbarri.Kalbarri coastal walks, stunning but cold and windy!
Natures Window - just before the rain had us running back to the car.
More Kalbarri National Park in between showers.
Over-nighter at Galena Bridge - here we met up with Mason, Lesh and Liam for our drive to Steep Point. So far this was the coldest night we've had, even got to use our diesel heater!
Heading in to Steep Point with our personal tour guide - Mason.
The troopies parked up together enjoying the view.
The coastal track in to camp was a stunner.
Arriving at the blow-holes. Mason loving his new ride!
Blow hole...
Our home for 3 nights - Shelter Bay.
Magical water and a great spot to snorkel.
Obligatory photo with this sign!
Never ending scenery.
Can't get tired of waking up to this view!
All we caught was some reef. Still not a bad day in the office.
Fresh oysters!
On the way to Coral Bay - unfortunately this spot had the worst toilets we've ever seen! Yes that's the moon.
Coral Bay for the day - Managed a quick snorkel but some nasty weather was forecast, so we moved on to Cape Range NP.
Getting used to our new kitchen.
The wet and windy weather caught up with us for a day and a bit.
Lots of time for Planet Earth & Yahtzee!
Weather clearing slowly. Great spot at Osprey Bay.
Hikes in Cape Range - Yardie Creek.
A day at Turquoise Bay, absolute bliss. Rox even spotted a turtle whilst snorkelling here.
Didn't see a whale shark, so this was the next best thing in Exmouth.
Met up with the gang again at Fortescue River.
Waking up in spots like this - awesome. Getting warmer now, about 27 degrees.
Another night around the camp fire - somewhere North of Port Hedland.
Rox enjoying a morning run along Cable Beach.
Me chilling by the car.
Spot Rox! Enjoying temperatures over 30 degrees now.
Chilli beer! Here we also met up with my parents for a few days, very welcome catch up.
Bit of study to complete before heading on to the Gibb - anticipating no signal for a week.
The prison tree near Derby.
Windjana Gorge NP - one of the hundreds of freshies floating about.
Enjoying stretching our legs after many days in the car.
Getting those close ups.
The result.
Entering Tunnel Creek we were greeted by this local.
Rox was not impressed. Took a little convincing to get her to come past him.
Spot the fruit bats.
More Tunnel Creek, very welcoming on a hot day - this place is like an air conditioned room!
Another beautiful free camp along the Gibb River Road.
Cold showers were amazing in this heat!
Cooking on the fire is great fun!
Made some new friends!
Exploring Bell Gorge. Almost stepped on a snake at this campground, luckily just an olive python!
Exploring further...
And that's far enough.
Back at the main pool in Bell - spent most of the morning in and out of these pools.
Lots to see here.
Setting up camp on the sandy banks of a creek after a few more hours of driving.
Cooking on the hot coals whilst star gazing - need to savour these moments!
Bit of damper with our soup. Hot, straight off the pan is best!
The next morning, ready to hit the road again.
One of several small creek crossings - unfortunately not more water around this late in the year (August).
The start of Manning Gorge. Very scenic here.
Jumping into the main pool at Manning - scared me just a bit.
First call home on the Gibb - free phone provided at Mt Barnett Roadhouse.
Rox having a swim at Galvans Gorge. Not my favourite colour so I stayed out.
My personal gate opener. Thanks!
Arriving at Wunnamurra Gorge after a 10km 4x4 track in (1 hour drive).
Beautiful swimming hole at the bottom.
500m further on there's a small section of rock art. Over 3800 years old!
And don't forget the waterfalls.
Camped up for the night again - more damper to be made on this fire.
These guys own the road. Not a huge amount of concern shown towards anyone else.
Mmm love the dust.
Time to sit and wait.
Found a patch of Telstra signal here, lets celebrate with a selfie!
Arriving at the Pentecost River, nearing the end of our time on the Gibb.
And crossing the Pentecost, again sadly quite dry. But the scenery is spectacular regardless!
Got bogged at night coming into this camp - this was the aftermath in the morning after digging for 30 minutes trying to find this recovery track that had buried itself. I was not prepared for that morning workout.
Off the Gibb and on our way into Kununurra - the start of Ivanhoe Crossing.
Main crossing - very fun and scenic with the pelicans.
Main crossing from another angle, spent a little while here enjoying the views. As you can see Rox mastered the drone photography very quickly, however she needs to practice landing... got a nice cut on my thumb trying to catch the drone!
Arrived at Lake Argyle for some relaxation and luxury!
A few additional detours brought the first part up to about 4,500 km of which about 1,300 km were on unsealed roads. Days on the road: 25.
See you in the next entry.
