FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND

After basking in the sun around the tip of Australia we settled in for the arvo and that night at a little free camp on the beach called Somerset.

The next morning we did the scenic 5 beaches drive along the Eastern coastline of the cape.

Upon returning on the 'highway' we had our usual traffic of cattle and eagles, and for the first time, wild horses too.

One more night at Punsand Bay, enjoying the pool and its pristine beach, except no swimming in the croc infested sea.

Time to leave the tip, back onto the ferry.

Plenty of fires around, little bit of a wait for this one to clear.

This night at Captain Billy's Landing was awesome, no one else around!

We made it back to semi-civilisation. Just in time to get internet and watch our friends get married.

Our campsite in the mining town - Weipa.

Another beautiful camp at Hanns Crossing - Lakefield National Park.

On our way to Cooktown, I almost walked into this beast!

On a walk to a waterfall - where the walk ended up being far more spectacular than the trickle at the end.

Views from one of the lookouts at Cooktown.

Trying to catch dinner at Archer point.

Very windy so resorted to beers instead as well got chatting with another camper whom we ended up travelling a few nights with.

The view leaving Archer point the following morning.

No official signage to get to Trevathan Falls. What a stunning swimming hole!

Classic pub feeds! What a spot too!

Another hidden gem!

More falls and views along the way!

Camping at Home Rule.

Went a short way along the CREB - but with recent rains we decided the Bloomfield would be more appropriate.

Still a very steep dirt road!

With rain this track also becomes a bit sketchy, definitely 4x4 only.

Made it to Cape Tribulation, very weird feeling seeing city cars and well groomed people again!

The first of many awesome board walks in the area.

The Daintree rainforest really is spectacular.

A photo of me, because apparently there aren't enough.

This is considered a beach camp in Cape Tribulation. But still a good spot before they crammed another 5 cars next to us.

Epic camping nachos for dinner!

A late night guided walk showed us many cool creatures, these tree frogs being the only ones we photographed.

Crazy trees line the walks, most of them far more spectacular in the flesh.

Swamp boardwalk selfie!

More hard beaches, more handstands.

Rox wanted to take this little fella home. But who wouldn't! Some kind of Rat kangaroo?? Was being looked after at the Daintree Ice-cream company.

Final viewpoint before catching the ferry across the river.

Waking up in Daintree village. Corrugations are gone, tarmac is back!

We did the tourist trap at Mossman Gorge. They no longer let you walk up to the start of the gorge, due to covid you now have to take the $22 bus, how does that make sense???

Look, a rock!

It was a very nice walk though.

With plenty of hidden treasures.

First of a few swimming opportunities.

Ice cold water is a blessing in FNQ.

Back on the highway heading South - had a visitor in our car that night.

Arrival in Port Douglas. Time to spend a few nights hanging out with family friends.

Rox went for a microlight flight, now I'm convinced we need one!

On the road again after regrouping in Port Douglas / Palm Cove. This Cathedral fig tree was insane!

And so was the famous Curtain Fig Tree!

And then onto more waterfalls!

We saw that many falls over a few days, we almost became 'falled' out.

But each one was unique...

And just as impressive and big as the last.

The Atherton table lands were absolutely spectacular.

Even more waterfalls!

And more glorious views.

...Even on the drive.

We eventually made it back to the coast...

But only for one night before we found ourselves back in the mountains at Murray Falls.

But here it was more about the swimming down stream of the falls.

Mandatory crab sandwiches were consumed in Cardwell.

And another view along the way!

Arriving at Wallaman falls, first stop was a swim to cool off.

Didn't actually need the swim. After 3 months of travelling we have our first proper down pour - the awnings did nothing to protect us getting soaked, but somehow the fire survived.

After the rain we were treated with a stunning red sky.

Now that is a waterfall! Wallaman Falls - 268 metres high. The highest in Australia!

A tricky hike down to the base of the falls, but even more challenging on the way up. With high humidity and storm weathered pathways from the night before.

Another storm this night with some epic lighting and thunder. Makes for interesting cooking.

Another day of swimming holes!

It was usually around 30 degrees and quite humid, so these spots were a blessing!

Big Crystal Creek was a winner!

With the rock slides being another hit!

Woop we've made it to Townsville, time to spend time with friends and get ourselves ready for the trip further down the coast!

Actual distance ended up being about 2500km with our waterfall detours. I also replaced all the Troopy's oils in Cairns so the old girl should happily carry us the rest of the way round.
